The Department of Orthopedics
The Department of Orthopaedics of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University is a national key discipline, a doctoral degree-granting site, a postdoctoral mobile station, and a key discipline in the first, second and third phases of the Ministry of Education's "211" project The department has been honored with numerous international, national, provincial and ministerial awards.
The Department of Orthopaedics of Zhongshan Hospital has had a long history, establishing in1937 when the hospital was founded. O manyMrenowned specialists have emerged since then and made great impact on the progession of orthopaedics in China. Prof. Li, Hongru, a famous orthopaedics specialist and educator, was one of the founders of orthopaedics in our country, and a Level-2 professor awarded by the Ministry of Health. Prof. Wu, Zuyao participated as a key member in the compilationof the first unified textbook of the nation's medical colleges and universities titled "Surgery", China's magnum opus of surgery titled "Huang Jiasi's Textbook of Surgery", as well as China's first "Textbook of Orthopaedic Surgery", "Orthopaedic Surgery";. Prof. Qiu, Lin was one of thefirst educators in hospital management. Prof. Shi, Yifei wasamong the pioneers in the application of the thumb reconstruction using second toe transfer technique (see Shanghai Local History). Prof. Chen, Zhongwei, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Department of Biology), an academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences, one of the founding fathers of China's microsurgery, was regarded as "the father of the world's microsurgery" because of his success in the world's first successful replantation of a severed arm in 1963. Prof. Zhang, Guangjian was the first to promote AO concept in the Shanghai area since 1988 and held the first national AO workshop in Shanghai in 1993. Now the AO concept has become thea worldwide standard model of orthopaedic internal fixation.
The history of the Department of Orthopaedics of Zhongshan Hospital is rich with glory. Zhongshan Hospital began attempting open reduction and internal fixation of fractures inas early as in the late 1940s.I 1953, intervertebral discography was performed. Since 1962, experimental research on micro vessel surgical techniques, innovated was conducted and led to theionof a variety of microsurgery, instruments suture concepts, suture materials and small vessels transplant techniques. In 1970, total humerus replacement surgery. using metal prothesis was performed In the same year, the Shanghai Type II artificial femoral head, was designed and introducedto update from the original Type I model. In 1974, the newly emerged concept of limb preservation andwas quickly adopted by Zhongshan turn into great success. In 1976, emergency anastomotic vascular free flap transplantation. was introduced In the same year, knee arthroscopy, was performed marking its contribution to the early development of arthroscopic surgery in the Shanghai area. In 1980, the department was honored with the Scientific and Technological Achievement Award of the Ministry of Health for the application of synovectomy and artificial joint replacement for the treatment of rheumatoid. In 1982, the Microsurgery Central Laboratory was established under the leadership of Academician Chen, Zhongwei. He designed the iliac bone transfer with rotary iliac deep vascular tip for the treatment of aseptic necrosis of the femoral head in children and adults. In 1996, Chen, Zhongwei completed the development of a multi-dimension-freedom electronic prosthetic hand controlled by a reconstructed finger, which won the first prize in the State Technological Invention Award. In 2003, the team led by Academician Chen, Zhongwei and East China University of Science and Technology won the second prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award for the development and application of calcium phosphate cement.
Since the reform and opening-up, the Department of Orthopaedics of Zhongshan Hospital has introduced and carried out many new technologies and methods., including total hip replacement, allogeneic knee transplantation, minimally invasive surgery of percutaneous discectomy for lumbar disc herniation, anterolateral approach for thoracolumbar burst fracture, of Kanadaimplementation the e device, Tagawa’s rotational acetabularosteotomy for developmental dislocation of the hip in adults. In addition, the Department of Orthopaedics took the lead in performing difficult surgeries such as synovectomy for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, internal fixation of odontoid fracture, and limb-preserving reconstruction surgeries for pelvic and limb tumors after large resection. The department was also leading in cranial base deformity and upper cervical spine surgery, as well as osteotomy for severe spinal deformity. RExpertise in orthopedic trauma, spine surgery, joint surgery, and bone and soft tissue tumor was a proud trademark in the history of the Department of Orthopaedics of Zhongshan Hospital.
The orthopedic team of Zhongshan Hospital has strong comprehensive strength. Prof. Chen, Zhengrong served as the vice-chairman of the Trauma Society of the Chinese Medical Association, the chairman of the Trauma Specialty Committee of the Shanghai Medical Association, and the deputy editor-in-chief of the Chinese Journal of Trauma. He specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of joint surgery, spinal surgery diseases and bone tumors. Prof. Chen, Tongyi was the deputy director of the Academic Committee of the Mobilization Center of National Biomedical Materials, a visiting professor of the Engineering Research Center for Biomedical Materials of Ministry of Education, a member of the Microsurgery Society of the Chinese Medical Association and vice-chairman of the Shanghai Branch, and has considerable attainments in spinal surgery, artificial joint replacement, peripheral nerve injury, limb replantation and free tissue transplantation, as well as in the diagnosis and treatment of complex trauma.
