Founded in 1937, Zhongshan Hospital was named in memory of Sun Yat-sen, the pioneer of the Chinese democratic revolution, and was one of the earliest large-scale general hospitals founded and managed by the Chinese people. Dr. Yan Fuqing, the founder of the hospital, was the first Chinese who was awarded the Ph.D. degree of public health science in the US and was also the founder of Shanghai Medical College
The hospital is supervised by National Health Commission. Zhongshan Hospital is one of the first units of the National Development and Reform Commission to create a comprehensive national medical center, and is a pilot unit of the National Health Commission for high-quality development of public hospitals. The hospital is a comprehensive teaching hospital affiliated to Fudan University. In the performance appraisal of the national public hospitals, the hospital ranked first nationwide in 2020 and second in 2021, and gained the highest rating of "A++" for successive 5 years.
Zhongshan Hospital is well managed and developing under the leadership of the CPC. The comprehensive strength of the disciplines is outstanding. The clinical ability of the hospital in the fields of heart, liver, kidney, lung, digestive tract and pan-vascular diseases is at the top level in China and also well-known over the world. The hospital takes advantage of its preponderant disciplines to promote the coordinated development of multiple high-quality characteristic discipline groups. It is the home to national clinical research center for interventional medicine, national public health and major pandemic prevention construction project, national key discipline (respiratory) development project, and also endowed 29 national key clinical specialties and 43 Shanghai key disciplines and specialties development projects. It’s a national "flagship" hospital pilot unit of traditional Chinese and Western medicine collaboration. It continuously promotes the "disease-centered" one-stop diagnosis and treatment service, and has 33 disease-centered multidisciplinary clinical diagnosis and treatment centers inside the hospital.
As one of the founding units of comprehensive national medical centers, the hospital is building two brand new courtyard, Shanghai International Medical Science & Technology Innovation Center and Qingpu New City Campus (Phase I), striving to make technological breakthrough in the biomedical field, and create the "pillar of the nation in the health field".
Medical services are high-quality and efficient. The headquarters of the hospital covers an area of 108,900 square meters, with 2,005 approved beds, 73 disciplines, 164 medical and nursing subspecialties and 84 MDT teams, fully meeting the multi-level and diversified diagnosis and treatment needs of patients. In 2023, the number of outpatients and emergency visits in the hospital was 5,558,399, 217,838 patients were discharged from hospital, and 160,837 patients were hospitalized for surgery, with an average hospital stay of 5.1 days. Anchoring the frontier of science and technology in the medical field, the hospital successfully carried out the first robot-assisted living donor liver transplantation in Asia, the first percutaneous aortic valve replacement with polymer valve in the world and other cutting-edge technologies.
Medical facilities and equipment are advanced. The hospital is firstly equipped whole body PET-CT in the world. PET-MR, da Vinci surgical robot, helical tomotherapy system (Tomo Therapy), linear accelerator (LA), 320-row 640-slice overspeed spiral CT, femtosecond ophthalmic laser surgery system, hybrid operating room system and telemedicine teaching system are equipped as well.
Since its establishment, the hospital has 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It has nearly 400 doctoral or master's supervisor. At present, there are about 6000 registered employees, including nearly 800 with senior professional titles.
Achievements in scientific research innovation are remarkable. The hospital has 1 National Key Laboratory (Cardiology), 1 National Engineering Laboratory (Therapeutic Vaccine), 1 NFSC Basic Science Center (Pan-Vascular Interventional Complex System), 8 provincial and ministerial engineering research centers, 7 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, 1 Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center, 3 Shanghai Professional Technical Service Platform and 8 Shanghai Research Institutes. In the past ten years, it has been awarded more than 1,000 national-level projects such as national science and technology major projects, key research and development programs and the National Natural Science Foundation projects; Since 2006, the hospital has been granted 10 national awards (one first prize of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology) and 74 provincial and ministerial awards. Since 2014, nearly 8,000 SCI papers have been published, and many high-quality research results have been published in top international journals such as Cell, Nature, Lancet Oncology, etc. Since 2007, nearly 2,000 patents have been granted, and commercialization of medical innovation has been greatly promoted to benefit the people. Clinical Cancer Bulletin, an English journal sponsored by the hospital, was selected as the new high starting point journal of Excellence Action Plan for China STM Journals. The hospital ranked the third in China and the first in Shanghai in the comprehensive ranking of China Hospital Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) for consecutive years.
Its educational and teaching strength is tremendous, and it has built an excellent doctor training system. It has 18 doctoral programs, 21 master programs and 1 mobile postdoctoral station for Clinical Medicine of Fudan University. It has 21 standardization training bases for resident physicians (7 national key specialty bases); 30 standardization training bases for specialist physicians. It is among the first batch of national clinical teaching and training demonstration centers, the first batch of national standardization training demonstration bases for resident physicians. It has been awarded the second prize of National Teaching Achievement Award, and special prize of Shanghai Teaching Achievement Award.

Actively undertake social responsibilities. The hospital accepted the task from the National Health Commission and sent personnel to participate in the medical assistance task in Morocco. Since 2011, the hospital has organized medical teams every year for patients in rural and developing areas; it successively supported medical institutions in Tibet, Xinjiang, Yunnan and other provinces in China, and achieved good results.
