Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Zhongshan Hospital has a long history.. It was established by senior experts including Yufen Zhou, Junkang Chen, Hanrong Cai, and Xinglin Xu in June 1959, who were appointed by the former Shanghai Medical College (now Fudan University) to initiate the department at Zhongshan Hospital. Over the past six decades, the department has been led by renowned obstetrics and gynecology experts, including Danjing Sheng, Laichun Yang, Dan Yang, and Ruiqin Tu. Additionally, experts in gynecological oncology, such as Rongyu Zang, have also worked in the department and held positions as department heads. The current head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department is Chief Physician Jiarong Zhang.

After 60 years of steadfast struggle and with the care and support of previous hospital leaders, Zhongshan Obstetrics and Gynecology Department Department has made significant progress. By 2023, it has grown into a department with 23 doctors, including 2 chief physicians and 3 associate chief physicians. The department integrates medical treatment, teaching, and scientific research. It offers more than 50 beds and provides medical services to over 70,000 outpatient visitors annually, including patients from various provinces and cities across the country. In addition to general outpatient services and expert consultations (including VIP services), the department also offers specialized clinics, including cervical screening and treatment clinics, endometriosis and endocrine specialty clinics, minimally invasive gynecological clinics, pelvic floor dysfunction clinics, early pregnancy clinics, high-risk obstetrics clinics, and Down syndrome biochemical screening clinics.

The department conducts nearly 2,000 inpatient surgeries each year, covering a wide range of procedures, from complex open surgeries to laparoscopic surgeries, which include single-port laparoscopy, transvaginal single-port laparoscopy (V-NOTES), and da Vinci robot-assisted surgeries. Procedures involving hysteroscopy and vaginoscopy are also routinely performed. Starting in 2018, the department initiated the "Shanghai Critical Care Consultation Center for Pregnant Women" and the establishment of the "Shanghai Prenatal Diagnosis (Screening) Center." Over the past three years, leveraging the strong interdisciplinary treatment capabilities of Zhongshan Hospital, the department has successfully treated hundreds of women, including non-pregnant pregnant women, high-risk pregnant women, and critically ill pregnant women, ensuring the safety of both mothers and infants.

With the support and care from leaders at all levels, the medical and nursing staff of the department adhere to the tradition of excellent medical care. They maintain a balance between tradition and innovation, continually improving department regulations, medical care practices, and nursing protocols. The department's focus on clinical diagnosis and treatment is complemented by its commitment to developing teaching and research activities. The department emphasizes teaching and has strong teaching capabilities. For many years, the department has been responsible for teaching medical students at Fudan University's Clinical Medical College. It also serves as a standardized training base for resident physicians in Shanghai. The department has nurtured a substantial number of high-quality obstetrics and gynecology medical professionals.

In the realm of scientific research, the department relies on the Central Laboratory of Zhongshan Hospital to undertake numerous national and municipal research projects. Several members of the department serve as editors for international and domestic core medical journals.
