Hematology

Introduction

In 1955, led by Professor Chen Yueshu, one of founders of clinical hematology in China and a well-known hematologist, the Hematology Department of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University was founded. Since then, it has trained countless professionals in hematology for allied hospitals and made a significant contribution to the technological development of hematopathy diagnosis and treatment in China. The present director and academic leader of the department is Professor Liu Peng, 

Staff

There are 18 physicians and 1 full-time technician in the department. Rationally structured, the department has the middle-aged and young staff as its backbone. With 7 staff members holding a senior title (5 professors and 2 associate professors), among whom 2 are doctoral supervisors and 1 master supervisor, 8 holding an intermediate title and 4 holding a primary title, 90 percent of the staff have at least a master’s degree and 50 percent a doctoral degree.

Clinical features

The department has 59 general wards, 12 daycare units, 7 rotating emergency wards, and 4 laminar flow rooms. Every year, it receives about 4,000 inpatients and 30,000 outpatients. It takes the lead in China in treating lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and immune thrombocytopenia, as well as in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Education

The department is a degree-conferring unit for doctoral students and master students studying hematology at Fudan University. It is in charge of training undergraduates, master students, doctoral students, and 8-year program students in Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University.

Academic Researches

With the clinical lab and hematological lab, the department has great strength and has made enormous achievements in researches on lympho proliferative disease and immune thrombocytopenia. It undertook several projects and sub-projects supported and funded by Natural Science Foundation of China, National Support Plan of the “Twelfth Five-year Plan”, Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, and Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission. The department has already published dozens of SCI papers.
