Ophthalmology


The Department of Ophthalmology at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, was established in 1945. Professor GUO Bingkuan previously served as the head of the department, and Professors NI Chuo, CHEN Daoyu, and CAI Songnian also worked here. In 1952, due to an institutional reorganization, the Ophthalmology departments of Zhongshan Hospital and Huashan Hospital merged to establish the Department of Ophthalmology of Shanghai Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital (EENT Hospital). In 1976, Professor LI Mianqin relocated from the EENT Hospital and re-established the Department of Ophthalmology at Zhongshan Hospital. Professors LI Mianqin, ZHU Zhizhong, and YUAN Fei have subsequently served as the heads of the department. The current head of the department is Professor DAI Jinhui.

 

Department of Ophthalmology at Zhongshan Hospital has made tremendous progress over the years, building a highly professional department with excellent medical care, education, and scientific research. It is now an integral part of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, the National Key Discipline, at the School of Clinical Medicine, Fudan University. Professor YUAN Fei, a leading figure in the field of ophthalmology, holds the positions of academic director of the department, chief physician, doctoral supervisor, and deputy head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Fudan University. He is an active member of numerous international professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS). He also serves as the vice chairman of the Eye Specialty Committee of the Shanghai Social Organization Association. Professor DAI Jinhui, the current head of the department, holds the positions of chief physician, doctoral supervisor, and deputy head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Fudan University. He serves as the chairman of the Shanghai Medical Association's Optometry Specialty Branch, deputy leader of the Visual Impairment Assistive Technology Group of the China Association of Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons, and a member of the Ophthalmology Group of the Chinese Medical Association, among other national and regional academic organizations.

 

Clinical Healthcare

 

The Ophthalmology Department is equipped with a team of highly skilled professionals and cutting-edge technology, which enables them to diagnose and treat a wide range of eye disorders and successfully manage challenging cases, particularly those complicated by systemic conditions, The current medical team consists of four chief physicians, three deputy chief physicians, and nine attending physicians, including three doctoral supervisors and three master's supervisors. The department has established a Vision Center and offers multiple specialty outpatient clinics for myopia, cataracts, glaucoma, retinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and uveitis. The department has also built two multidisciplinary teams for neuro-ophthalmology and uveitis management. At present, the department is capable of performing various eye surgeries, including complex cataract surgery (femtosecond laser-assisted/phacoemulsification), refractive surgery (SMILE, femtosecond LASIK, LASEK, etc.), phakic IOL implantation surgery (ICL/PRL), vitreoretinal surgery, glaucoma surgery, strabismus surgery, oculoplastic surgery, and corneal collagen cross-linking, etc.

 

Scientific Research and Teaching

 

The Department of Ophthalmology at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, is one of the first to be certified by the China Food and Drug Administration to meet GCP standards for conducting clinical trials in ophthalmology. It has undertaken dozens of national and provincial research projects, published hundreds of papers in both domestic and international journals, and authored or edited dozens of monographs, books, and textbooks. Out of the numerous patents obtained, three have been successfully commercialized. The department maintains close ties with academic institutions domestically and abroad, fostering long-term collaborations with universities' ophthalmology departments in the United States, Japan, Australia, and other countries. The department has conducted comprehensive and practical research in neovascularization and retinal diseases, optometry, dry eye, clinical epidemiology, and evidence-based medicine, garnering significant attention and recognition in these fields.

 

The Department of Ophthalmology at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, is authorized to award doctoral and master's degrees. The department is one of the earliest standardized residency training bases in Shanghai and a founding member of the "Elite Teaching Hospital Alliance for Ophthalmology Residents in China." The department's residency training program has consistently ranked among the top in recent years. In the 2020 National Residency Proficiency Test, the department secured first place not only in Shanghai but also in China. Professor YUAN Fei was awarded the title of Outstanding Teaching Professor in Shanghai in 2021. Several residents were recognized with the titles of Outstanding Residents by the Shanghai government, Fudan University, and Zhongshan Hospital.

 

Public Outreach and Social Welfare

 

The Department of Ophthalmology at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University places great emphasis on public outreach and welfare activities. The department leverages traditional and new media to promote public awareness about eye health every year. The annual "Eye-Care Day" campaign has become a distinctive brand, earning the "Civilized Service Brand" award in the inaugural "Five Hearts Series Awards" at Zhongshan Hospital. Professor YUAN Fei and colleagues have repeatedly led national medical teams to remote and underserved areas to provide medical care and medications, demonstrating the department's strong sense of social responsibility.
