Plastic Reconstruction Surgery

Zhongshan Hospital, affiliated to the Fudan University in Shanghai (formerly Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Medical College), is the cradle of plastic surgery in China. In 1948, Prof. Webster, the Chairman of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, held a plastic surgery workshop at Zhongshan Hospital, introducing modern plastic surgery to China for the first time. After the workshop, the trainees returned to their respective hospitals, with many of them becoming the founders of plastic surgery departments across the country. Among them, Academician Zhang Disheng established the Plastic Surgery Department at Guangci Hospital (now Ruijin Hospital) and later the Plastic and Reconstruction Department at Shanghai 9th People’s Hospital. Prof. Song Ruyao founded the Plastic Surgery Department at Beijing Xiehe Hospital (now the Plastic Surgery Hospital affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences); Prof. Zhu Hongyin established the Plastic Surgery Department at Peking University Third Hospital; and Prof. Wang Liangneng founded the Plastic Surgery Department at the Fourth Military Medical University Xijing Hospital in Xi’an. Those Plastic Surgery Department are still the most lage and famous plastic surgery in China at present.

As one of the earliest plastic surgery departments in China, the Plastic Surgery Department at Zhongshan Hospital was officially established in 1981 and holds a prominent reputation in the field. It was one of the first facilities in the country authorized to grant doctoral and master’s degrees and the first to accept foreign students. Our department is at the forefront of medical techniques and practice scale in China. The department boasts 10 physicians, including 5 professors (chief physicians), 7 associate professors (associate chief physicians), and 13 attending physicians (lecturers). Most of the physicians have studied overseas or have been exchange scholars in the United States, Japan, or South Korea. The majority hold doctoral degrees.

The department is a National Standardized Training Base for Plastic Surgeons and offers doctoral and master’s degrees. It attracts numerous young individuals passionate about plastic surgery to study here. Over the years, the department has trained many outstanding doctoral and master’s degree students in Chinese plastic surgery and more than 20 foreign plastic surgery students from South Korea and other countries. The department also teaches dozens of plastic surgery physicians from other parts of China, contributing significantly to the global plastic surgery community by training many excellent plastic surgeons.

The department currently has 60 beds. The annual outpatient volume is 40,000, with over 10,000 surgeries performed each year. The General Outpatient Clinic is open during the daytime Monday through Saturday. Emergency services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Supported by the comprehensive strength of Zhongshan Hospital, the department leads in performing cosmetic surgery and complex major reconstructive surgeries in China, working closely with other clinical and support departments. A large number of patients with challenging conditions are transferred to the department from all over the country each year, and we consistently achieve therapeutic outcomes that satisfy both physicians and patients.
