Department Overview
The Department of Pain Medicine in Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University was established in 1992,and has a history of more than 30 years. At the initial stage, the department mainly focused on outpatient clinic, dedicated to the treatment of acute and chronic pain caused by various diseases. With the development of economy, the advancement of medical technology and the increase of patients' need, the department has gradually expanded its service scope and treatment means, changing from the traditional diagnosis and treatment mode to the interdisciplinary, multi-modal and surgery-based one. At present, the Department of Pain Medicine has pain clinics for outpatients and wards for inpatients. In addition, based on the Zhongshan Hospital of Fudan University as the highland of medical care in China and the National Medical Center, the department focuses on the two major characteristics of the hospital, "tumor" and "pan-vascular", and takes advantage of the hospital's smart healthcare ecosystem to create a multidisciplinary palliative care platform for patients with progressive cancers and other critical diseases so as to provide high-quality and personalized healthcare services for the patients.

Our pain medicine specialists treat a wide range of conditions
including but not limited to: joint pain; back pain, failed back syndrome; arthritis; advanced cancer-related pain; peripheral neuropathy; postherpetic neuralgia; ischemic pain; diabetic neuropathy; diabetes-related foot conditions.
In addition, we established a platform of intravenous port management to serve patients who need intravenous chemotherapy, prolonged intravenous nutrition and long-term/intermittent intravenous fluids/blood transfusion. On this platform, pre-installation assessment, installation, follow-up, consultation, and removal are provided by high-qualified specialists.
Multidisciplinary Palliative Care Platform for Progressive Cancer Patients serves the ones in progressive stages, relieving them from various discomfort symptoms, initiating individualized multidisciplinary consultation, and providing comprehensive medical care for patients and their families.
Treatment
The Department of Pain Medicine is constantly innovating and advancing in pain management technologies. In addition to traditional treatments (including nerve block, radiofrequency ablation, etc.), the Department currently apply neuromodulation at the level of the spinal cord/peripheral nerves, including intrathecal drug delivery and spinal cord stimulation, and other new technologies. In a word, our department provide multiple choices of analgesic options to improve the quality of the overall analgesia. In addition, comprehensive pain management utilizing a combination of analgesics, physical therapy, psychotherapy is also a feature of our department.
In 2023, the department completed nearly four hundred pain interventions, with over one hundred intrathecal drug delivery and spinal cord stimulation.
Medical Team
There are six doctors in our medical team including one professor and one associated professor. Cang Jing, professor and the current director of our department, has been a specialist in anesthesia and pain medicine for over 30years. She has been awarded many honorary titles for her excellent clinical ability, as well as her responsibility and patient. In addition, her academic work is well-known as highly cited publications in BMC Medicine, Cell Proliferation, Anesthesia & Analgesia and other world-class journals. She has been supported by two grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
The Department of Pain medicine values academic research and technological innovation, actively participate in academic activities at home and abroad. We are also willing to apply cut-in-edge technologies to achieve satisfied analgesia.
In the face of increasingly pain management needs, the Department of Pain Medicine will continue to uphold the Zhongshan spirit of "all for the patients" and further improve the quality of medical services.
