The Department of colorectal surgery of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University has a long history in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer relying on the general surgery platform. It has been passed down from professors Wu zhaoguang, Wang chengpei, Wu zhaohan and Cai chengji to professors Qin xinyu and Xu jianmin. Since 2002, a colorectal surgery group has been established under the leadership of Professor Qin xinyu and Professor Xu jianmin. A subspecialty of colorectal surgery was established in 2015, and colorectal surgery department was formally established in 2023. After more than 20 years of development, under the leadership of Professor Xu jianmin, the Department has become a colorectal cancer diagnosis and treatment center integrating "medicine, teaching and research", and the diagnosis and treatment level is in the forefront in China.

In terms of clinical diagnosis and treatment, we should promote the early screening of colorectal cancer and create an early diagnosis and treatment system for colorectal cancer. Focus on the minimally invasive surgery of colorectal cancer, lead the minimally invasive treatment of colorectal cancer, especially in the field of robotic surgery in colorectal cancer. The department was the first to establish a multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment team for colorectal cancer liver metastasis, innovate a series of methods, and take the lead in the world in the comprehensive treatment of colorectal cancer liver metastasis. The international top journal published many landmark papers, took the lead in formulating guidelines and publishing international editions, and gradually formed a standardized whole process diagnosis and treatment system. The Department currently has 96 beds. In 2023, 3080 cases of colorectal cancer surgery were carried out, of which 95.8% were minimally invasive surgery. It it the first to carry out robotic radical resection of rectal cancer in China, with an annual operation volume of more than 500 cases and a total of more than 5000 cases, ranking first at home and abroad. Carry out colorectal surgery specialist clinics (Monday to Wednesday afternoon, Thursday all day, Friday and Saturday morning), with 17000 patients diagnosed and treated annually; Carry out expert outpatient service and treat 14000 patients annually; It took the lead in establishing a multidisciplinary team (MDT) for colorectal cancer in China and opened MDT clinics, with 2000 patients diagnosed and treated annually and more than 8000 patients diagnosed and treated in total.

In terms of the Department, Professor Xu jianmin served as the director, and there were 3 professor staff, 7 vice professor staff, 10 attending staff and below, and 2 full-time scientific researchers; Among them, there are 2 Ph.D supervisors, 3 master supervisors, 15 graduate students and 1 post-doctoral student.

In terms of scientific research, it has received more than 80 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Eleventh Five Year Plan for tackling key scientific and technological problems, and the Ministry of health's clinical key discipline projects and so on, with a total funding of more than 70 million. The research results have been invited to speak more than 20 times at international conferences such as ASCO, ESMO, CRSA, etc; 245 papers were published, including 132 SCI papers, with a total impact factor of 848.183; The series of research has won the second prize of the national science and Technology Progress Award in 2015, the first prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award in 2013 and 2022, the first prize of the science and technology progress award of the Ministry of education in 2011, the first prize of Shanghai Medical Science and technology achievements in 2010 and 2019, and the third prize of the China Medical Science and Technology Award in 2021.
