Over eighty-five years of eventful history, the Zhongshan nurses have always adhered to the Zhongshan spirit of " all for the sake of patients, practicing the "grandeur and modesty" of Zhongshan culture and the "down-to-earth and truth-seeking" of Zhongshan work style. With clinical nursing technology innovation, talent cultivation, scientific management, and service innovation as the core elements of construction, guided by clinical problems, breakthrough in nursing research, information technology as the means, and interdisciplinary integration as the gripper, committed to building Zhongshan Nursing into a clinical nursing standard and quality standard output center that keeps pace with the development of Zhongshan medical, an important specialty nursing talent training center, and a clinical practice center for nursing technology innovation and transformation.

(1) Talent Echelon

Zhang Yuxia, the leader of Nursing Discipline, Director of Nursing Department, Doctor of Medicine, Doctoral Supervisor, Chief Nurse, Clinical Professor of Fudan University, and also serves as the vice dean of the School of Nursing at Fudan University. She holds important academic positions, including Foreign Fellow of American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), Deputy Director of the Project Management Committee of the Chinese Nursing Association, Vice Chairman of the Nursing Branch of the China Research Hospital Association, Member of the Nursing Subcommittee of the China Modern Hospital Management Think Tank, Fellow of the China Pharmaceutical Education Association and Deputy Director of the Nursing Subcommittee, Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Modern Nursing Vocational Education Group, and Vice Chairman of the Nursing Branch of the China Association for Maternal and Infant Health Care.

The nursing discipline currently has one doctoral supervisor and five master's supervisors, with research directions including emergency and critical care nursing, patient experience, chronic disease management, nursing management, and nursing education. There are currently 2,700 clinical nurses, 55 with senior professional titles, 75% have bachelor's degree or above, 70 with master's degrees, and 5 with doctoral degrees. Ten individuals have received the Shanghai "Medical New Star" Youth Medical Talent Training Program, three have been awarded the Fudan University "Top Ten Medical Youth", four have received the Shanghai Nursing Association's Outstanding Young Talent Nurturing Program, one has been honored as an Outstanding Nurse by the Chinese Nursing Association, six have been recognized as Outstanding Nurses by the Shanghai Nursing Association, and four have received the Shanghai Zuo Ying Nursing Award.

(2) Disciplines Status

In 2012, the nursing discipline was awarded the National Clinical Key Specialty Construction Project; in 2018, it was awarded the Fudan University "Double First-Class" Construction Project; in 2020, it was awarded the support of Fudan University's High-Level Local University Development Project. Zhongshan Nursing is recognized as a "Global Evidence-based Nursing Centre of Excellence" by JBI Centre of Excellence, Australia. Zhongshan nursing have always been adhering to the values of "upright conduct, integrity and innovation". After years of accumulation and hard work, Zhongshan Nursing has consistently ranked first in Shanghai in the Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) ranking of hospital disciplines in China for many years.

(3) Discipline Leadership

The Nursing Department participated in the development of national nursing standards and the preparation of related manuals - "Guidelines for the Implementation of Basic Data for Monitoring Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators", which has become a national reference book for the management of nursing quality indicators. In 2021, the first Asian Nursing Forum was held, and the “Declaration on High Quality Development of Nursing” was drafted and released jointly with 32 top medical institutions and nursing schools in China, providing important guidelines for nursing to firmly grasp the strategic opportunity period of high-quality development. Zhongshan nursing has taken the lead in writing a number of expert consensuses, including “Inpatient Nursing Service Experience Evaluation Standards”, “Expert Consensus of Intra-hospital Transfer for Adult patients with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation” and “Expert Consensus on Nursing Care of Rotational Atherevtomy”, which have effectively improved the status quo of clinical nursing practice and allowed more patients to benefit from them. Zhongshan nursing experience was concentrated and published a number of monographs, such as “Practical Clinical Nursing Standards for Critical Illnesses” and “Practical Nursing Standards for Emergency and Urgent Care”, to provide reference for our peers.

(4) National Influence

As the clinical teaching base for hemodialysis, emergency, cardiovascular, gastroenterology and intervention nursing of the Chinese Nursing Association outside Beijing; the clinical teaching hospital of the Shanghai International School of Ostomy Therapists; and the training base for nurses specializing in intensive care, hemodialysis, emergency, operating room, stoma, and community diabetes of the Shanghai Nursing Association, Nursing department annually undertakes the training and internship of hundreds of nurses from all over the country, spreading advanced nursing concepts and clinical skills nationwide. At the same time, it regularly hosts academic conferences including the Asian Nursing Forum, the nursing session of the Oriental Cardiology Conference, the nursing session of the Colorectal Forum, the nursing session of the Shanghai AKI-CRRT Forum, the nursing session of Endoscopic Therapy Conference, the nursing session of Interventional Therapy Conference, providing a platform of academic development for exchanges and sharing.

(5) International Cooperation

Adhering to the concept of "deepening international cooperation and exchanges, expanding new modes of innovation and development", the Nursing Department of Zhongshan Hospital maintains long-term and stable cooperation with universities and hospitals in many countries. Successfully introduced Professor Jos.M.Latour from the University of Plymouth in the UK, a world-renowned nursing scientist, as the guest professor to assist in understanding the forefront of international nursing and to broaden the channels for talent cultivation; long-term cooperation and exchange mechanism has been successfully established with the University of Kuopio in Finland, selecting outstanding clinical nursing backbones/students from both sides for exchange and visits; cooperative relationship has been established with the JBI Evidence-Based Health Care Research Center in Australia, and 2-3 outstanding clinical nursing talents are sent to Australia for training every year, completing a number of evidence-based nursing practice projects, promoting clinical innovation and patient experience.

With the development of society, changes in disease patterns, increasing needs of public health, and rapid advances in medical technology, Zhongshan nurses will continue to strive, innovate, and progressively enhance the innovation level, technological capacity, and reputation of the Zhongshan nursing discipline.
